Delays until 7.30pm

Arriva Trains Wales say that train services are now running through Shotton and are returning to normal. There still may be some services delayed by up to an hour. Disruption expected until 7.30pm.

There is still confusion over which bridge has been hit. We understand it is not the bridge on Chester Road West. We have spoken to both Cheshire Police and North Wales Police but neither appears to have any reports of vehicles hitting bridges in the area.

Disruption expected until 6pm

Arriva Trains Wales now say that there will be cancellations and delays on the Shotton to Chester line until at least 6pm.

Bridge repairs on Chester Road West

Network Rail has been carrying out repairs on the bridge which goes over Chester Road West in the last few days.

Damaged rubber fixtures, which are in place to protect the structure in event of a bridge strike, have been getting replaced we’re told.

Network Rail comment

I have spoken to Network Rail but information at the moment is limited. I am told that it has happened on the London - North West line. It is unclear which bridge has been hit at this stage.

Initial reports that the bridge near Shotton Railway station was hit seem to be incorrect - my colleague Jez Hemming is at the scene and says there is no sign of a collision. We’ll bring you more information when we have it.

We’re told that it’s very hot inside one train which has been halted.

According to Arriva Trains Wales all services running through Shotton have been cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until at least 5pm.

Live: Vehicle hits railway bridge

Rail services have come to a standstill after a vehicle has hit a bridge in Shotton.
