WIDNES pop star Mel C and her former pals in the Spice Girls have been booted out of taking part in Live Aid II this summer.

The singer was said to be teaming up again with Posh Spice Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton and Mel B for the massive outdoor concert at London's Hyde Park on Saturday, July 2.

However, because of their 'plastic pop music' the sensational reunion is never likely to happen.

A source at the BBC, televising the show, said: 'The Spice Girls offered their services but they don't fit the bill.

'With all respect to them, Live 8 isn't Party in the Park.'

A BBC spokesman added: 'Many of the biggest rock stars in the world have agreed to take part, and the Spice Girls just don't fit.'

The event was meant to end well-publicised differences between Geri and the rest of the band, after she walked out on them in 1998.

The year 2000 marked the Spice Girls' last performance together, and since then the band-mates have had mixed successes in solo careers.

However, in the past Mel C has apparently been the most reluctant Spice Girl to sign up to a reunion.

This may stem from the success of her solo career which has defied the critics by turning her into one of the most successful female artists of the last decade.

The 31-year-old's solo sales are close to three million, and a string of top five and top 10 singles have culminated in the release of her latest album Beautiful Intentions.

With the exception of the single Next Best Superstar, she co-writes all of her songs and releases songs on her own label Red Girl Records.

The line-up at the concert will include Sir Elton John, Coldplay, Joss Stone, Sir Paul McCartney, U2, Robbie Williams, Oasis, Sting and Eminem.

The Live Aid II show is called Live 8 and is aimed at pressurising leaders of the wealthy G8 nations to make poverty history.

A protest march against world poverty is also planned in Edinburgh to coincide with a summit of G8 leaders to be held at Gleneagles in July.

A Spice Girls source said: 'The girls will be gutted by the decision.'

Mel C is on tour in Germany and was also away when her beloved Liverpool football team clinched the Champions' League trophy in a penalty shoot-out.

She said of the game: 'It's incredible to see Liverpool back on top of Europe where they belong.

'I made sure I knew exactly what was happening in Istanbul.'
