A talented Chester musician has been awarded a seat in the world’s greatest orchestra of teenagers.
Nick Broughton, 15, from Littleton, who has been playing the double bass for four years, will join more than 160 other teenagers from across the UK to take part in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain 2017.
Having gained a place in the orchestra, which was acknowledged when it received The Queen’s Medal for Music in 2012, the Christleton High School pupil will travel the UK, playing in the finest venues up and down the country.
Nick will also participate in three residencies with prestigious music directors, perform in eight major concerts, play live on BBC Radio 3, appear on Classic FM, and celebrate the release of a new recording of The Planets by the orchestra.
He said: “I was really shocked when I found out, I didn't think I’d get in at first, I didn't think I was good enough.
“I didn’t really know much about classical music before I started playing the double bass but I've always really enjoyed listening to it.
“It’s a whole different world and there are so many more different colours to classical music, there isn't just one genre.”
Nick, who has always wanted a career in music said he is ‘really excited’ to become a member of the prestigious orchestra, starting on December 28.
He added: “It is widely seen as the world’s greatest orchestra of teenagers and I will join 162 other teenagers from all over the country to take part in this exciting orchestra.
“It is an amazing opportunity to make music with other like-minded teenagers and perform music to the highest level."
