TWO porters from Chester University saved a teenager’s life after she attempted to jump from the Grosvenor bridge.

Kevin McElmeel and Gerry Earps were passing in a vehicle when they spotted a 15-year-old girl acting strangely on the bridge at about 9.45pm on Monday, November 22.

Realising the girl was about to jump and with no thought for his own safety, Kevin rushed out of the car and grabbed hold of the girl’s arm.

By this time the youngster had already climbed over the wall of the bridge and was on a ledge perched precariously about 50 feet above the River Dee.

She struggled and was beginning to slip out of Kevin’s grip when the other porter, Gerry Earps, came to his aid and between them, and also now joined by passing police constable on his way to work, managed to haul the girl to safety.

Kevin said: “I just acted on instinct and was happy to help.” Gerry added: “We just did what needed to be done.”

Both porters have received letters of commendation from the Vice Chancellor of the University Professor Tim Wheeler.

He said: “I wish to commend your quick thinking and professional handling of what must have been an extremely stressful incident.”

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: “A passing police constable as well as a couple of members of the public noticed a girl on the wrong side on the Grosvenor bridge but managed to pull her off and into safety.”

North West Ambulance Service took the vulnerable teenager to Bowmere Hospital on the Countess of Chester Health Park where it understood she was detained under the Mental Health Act.
