WINSFORD cenotaph proudly bears the names of the brave soldiers from the town who gave their lives during the Great War.

Among the heroes who were remembered at Sunday's Remembrance Day service is Lance Corporal George Brereton.

George served alongside pals from Winsford, including Arthur Booth and Jim Dutton, who lived at Littler Lane. He died instantly in a bomb blast in the trenches.

George's name has come up because his nephew Brian Hamlett has discovered his war letters and postcards.

Brian said: 'They all lived at Littler Lane - my uncle, Arthur Booth and Jim Dutton. Arthur Booth would have been blown up with him, but went to get a pack of Wood-bines. When he came back there was just a big crater where he had left.'

The letters included were sent by Mr Brereton to sister Julia and brother Frank. The final letter was sent to the family by George's pal Thomas Royle after his death.
