ONE of the biggest boosts to leisure in Halton has finally been given the green light four months after the Venture Fields concept was first unveiled.

Proposals for the multi-million pound leisure development, part of the drive to regenerate derelict land in the Widnes Waterfront zone, were given the all clear by councillors last week.

Outline plans for the scheme, set to include a five-screen cinema, ice rink, bowling alley, climbing wall and restaurants, are now to become reality.

The development, by Widnes Regeneration Ltd, an arms length company jointly formed between the council and St Modwen Properties Plc, is estimated to cost in the region of £7m.

Two major leisure companies have already signed up to run facilities at Venture Fields. Loughborough-based Reel Cinemas and Midlands-based ice rink operator Blue Ice, are already on board.

Negotiations are now under way to find companies to run the climbing wall and bowling alley.
