MICHELLE Smith became Sandbach Town Council chairman last night.

The formality of investing the 36-year-old as chairman was expected to be completed as the Chronicle went to press yesterday. Her vice-chairman will be Cllr John Moore.

Cllr Smith only started her first term as a town councillor last summer, as vice-chairman to the late John Keeling. But when Cllr Keeling passed away in February she took over the mantle.

Cllr Smith said: 'I was thrown in at the deep end, but I'm a good swimmer. I wouldn't do this is if I didn't think I was capable. I've lived in Sandbach since I was seven years old, and I will always have the town's best interests at heart.'
