Law firms in Chester are giving a helping hand to the homeless in the city.
Staff at Slater and Gordon (incorporating Walker Smith Way Legal), who carried out legal work on the shop lease for free, will provide free hot coffee, tea and soup at the city’s SHARE shop in Northgate Street.
Another firm, Jolliffe & Co LLP, will sponsor all donated coffees at the SHARE shop for a week with staff volunteering at weekends serving coffee and sorting and packing donated clothing, toiletries and essential items destined for Chester or refugees in Leros, Greece.
Co-founder of SHARE Adam Dandy described how much the firms’ sponsorship means to the charity. He said: “Businesses supporting us in this way ensure that every penny that is raised in the Share Shop goes directly to help rehouse, clothe and feed people who are homeless in Chester. The Share Aid warehouse also needs a continuous stream of volunteers to ensure that the essential items reach refugees on the Greek island of Leros and in Uganda, Africa and we welcome offers of support from individuals and businesses who can contact us directly.
“We set up the charity initially to help refugees in Syria but it soon became clear that there was also a need to help the homeless in Chester. The charity has made a massive difference to people locally.
“The other week a woman who had been sleeping rough for three years in a car park came in and we were able to take her around the shop and get her some new clothes.
“It’s shocking how many homeless people there are in Chester and to have a shop where they can come and get clothing and a hot drink is great.”
Paul Makinson, who works at Slater and Gordon’s Chester office and is on the charity’s board said: “I am delighted that we have been able to help this worthy cause.
“The local community has really got behind this charity since its inception last year and as a firm we were keen to get involved.
“By sponsoring the coffee for the homeless we are illustrating our continued commitment to helping the homeless of Chester.”
Partner and Head of Corporate and Commercial for Jolliffe &Co LLP Simon Williams said; “Share Aid helps homeless people directly in Chester, as well as responds in a practical and innovative way to support the aid effort for the refugees in Europe and Africa. We are humbled to be able to support the Share Shop Chester coffee initiative and it’s great coffee too!”
