A FOUR-TON shopping park sign has been removed for safety reasons.

The 15ft-high Centertainment sign at the entrance to The Coliseum off Stanney Lane was taken down during high winds earlier this month, although there was no danger of it toppling over.

The operations manager for The Coliseum, Mike Jeffries, said: 'The sign was going to be taken down anyway to change the name on it.

'Not a lot of people call it Centertainment. They all call it The Coliseum so we are finished with the old name now. We just brought the work forward to do two jobs at once.

'We took the sign down with a crane. County highways had come down to see it because it had been vibrating in gales on the Wednesday.

'We decided, as a purely precautionary measure, to take it down. There was never any danger of it falling down. It will be back after Christmas.'
