A WASTE dump must open within four years in Cheshire - possibly in Mid Cheshire - after an order was served to close down a tip in Macclesfield.
Sties in both Middlewich and Haslington near Crewe have been designated as suitable for a landfill site, and different companies have submitted planning applications to Cheshire County Council in respect to both.
Campaigners in both areas have been out in force to say they don't want a landfill on their doorstep - but after Waste Recycling Group (WRG) was told it could no longer operate in Macclesfield, it seems as though one of the areas will become home to a dump.
Cheshire County Council planning officer David Adams said Macclesfield site would have to close a lot sooner than it was anticipated - unless WRG successfully appeals - and added: 'It would put pressure on the need for another landfill for non-recyclable waste in Cheshire.'
Middlewich Councillor Chalky White, of Middlewich Against Dumping (MAD), the pressure group set up in protest at the plans for the site at Kinderton Lodge, said: 'It's a bit of concern that WRG has lost the license, because if it had been granted there would be no need for a landfill site in Middlewich at all.'
He said the fight with Haslington was now getting dirty after community leaders at the Crewe village told council bosses to open a landfill at Middlewich.
Cllr White said added: 'The Haslington site is clearly a better option. Up until three or four months ago we would never have said that. We always maintained that landfill is not an option, but while we still believe that, the way councillors and the people in Haslington have spoken has left us no option but to speak out.
'The quality of the clay is better in Haslington and the infrastructure is better in Haslington. In my mind, Kinderton Lodge is dead in the water as long as an application is in to build a landfill in Haslington.'
Nevertheless, MAD is encouraging people to write in with comments about the development at Kinderton Lodge. Letters should be sent to: David Adams, Cheshire County Council, Back-ford Hall, Chester CH1 6PZ with the reference number 4/APP2004/0631 and 8/37171 included in the letter.
