COMMUNITY radio station Lache FM has enjoyed another successful spell on the airwaves after a recent 12-day broadcast.

The station, based in Lache Community Centre, featured a host of local DJs and guests along the way.

Among the highlights were Drive Time DJ Chris Gentile interviewing Big Brother 7 winner Pete Bennett live on air, and Coronation Street star Ian Puleston-Davies – who plays builder Owen Armstrong – popping in for a chat.

The launch party saw children from both Lache Primary and St Clare’s Primary Schools switch on the transmitter, after a competition to draw a picture of the Lache FM mascot, Lionel the Lache Lion.

Among the shows broadcast included an hour-long show from St Clare’s Year 6 class, an Elvis tribute and an underground reggae show, plus there was a one-hour tribute to the late David Lavender, by Andy Robinson of The Grosvenor Arms, Handbridge.

The station also broadcast a live five-hour show during the Lache Funday, which saw the annual broadcast of Lache Has Talent.

The contest – judged by X-Factor finalist Sami Brookes – was won by Ryleah Green and Hannah Dilla, both 11. The pair will now perform live at Fun in the Sun in Rhyl on August 28.

DJ Matt Poynton, who made his debut during the July 2012 broadcast, said; “Being part of the Lache FM team has given me so much confidence, and has given me an opportunity that I would’ve been too scared to do otherwise.”

Newcomer Peter Gittins, who did a reggae show, said; “I’ve had some great experience working in a studio and on live radio which is great for my CV.” The station, run by Lache Park Ltd, will now continue to broadcast more expansive internet radio broadcasts in the coming months, while aiming to gain a full-time community radio licence next year.
