LABOUR councillors on Cheshire West and Chester Council are campaigning against a £3m plus project to create a new cathedral square.

Labour is demanding the Tory-controlled authority drops plans for the St Werburgh Street area in favour of ‘more urgent’ priorities to help local people.

Cllr Ben Powell, Labour’s regeneration spokesperson said: “The fundamental issue is how does spending more than £3m contribute to the economic viability of Chester and the wider borough? We would argue that there is no evidence that it will.

“The public does not support such an extravagant project at a time of personal belt-tightening.”

Labour’s city ward member, Samantha Dixon, said: “People value the ‘breathing space’ of the cathedral green in what is essentially a congested city space.

Š“There are also strong views about the removal of railings around the war memorial. Many people believe the railings protect and preserve the memorial.

Š“Whether or not the application gets permission, the scheme should be scrapped because it is too expensive.”

Plans for the Cathedral project will be put before the planning committee in November. The closing date for public comments on theŠscheme is October 25.
