A new headteacher has been appointed at The King’s School in Chester.
Chariman of governors Joanne Clague announced the appointment of George Hartley to the role from September 2017.
Mr Hartley will be the 42nd headmaster at the school in its 475 year history and will take the helm from Chris Ramsey who is moving to Whitgift School, South London.
He is currently principal of Elizabeth College, Guernsey, a day school of 770 pupils where he has been instrumental in broadening the School’s horizons, raising academic standards and launching a successful fundraising capital campaign.
Previous to this, he was headmaster of sixth form at Berkhamstead School, having taught at Highgate School, Queen’s College, Taunton and Eton College.
Mr Hartley, 47, is married to Merewyn and the couple have two children, aged 10 and 12. He read geography at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, and completed an MSc in Environmental Science at Imperial College, London.
He said, “I am delighted and honoured to be given this role and am really excited at the prospect of making a real difference to the lives of King’s pupils in years to come. King’s is an outstanding school with a long and distinguished history and I am looking forward to building further on its great tradition. I am also looking forward to getting fully involved in the Chester community and bringing my young family to the North West with all it has to offer and where we have strong family links.”
Mrs Clague added, “We are delighted to have appointed George to be our next headmaster here at King’s. We carried out a rigorous and extensive recruitment process, which included looking outside the UK, and the field was extremely competitive. Chris Ramsey has been an outstanding headmaster over the last 10 years, overseeing an extensive development programme for the school and delivering an impressive range of educational achievements.
“I have no doubt that George will build on this legacy; taking King’s forward as a leading co-educational day school, ensuring it remains true to its history and also the vision for each pupil to achieve more than they thought possible in pursuit of unpretentious excellence.
