Cheshire Police have been inundated with ‘killer clown’ sightings.

The force said they had received a ‘number’ of calls and reports regarding the sinister craze.

Pranksters have been donning their clown costumes and frightening members of the public.

Earlier this week police said a group of young boys had been ‘chased’ by a clown in Ellesmere Port.

Further sightings in the town as well as Blacon have been reported on social media.

A Cheshire Police spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the current trend in America of people dressing up as clowns, which has reached the UK and received some publicity in the media.

“We have a received a number of reports relating to this phenomenon, here in Cheshire, and we’re also aware of rumours that are circulating on social media.

“While we appreciate Hallowe’en is just a short time away, scaring people – especially children and vulnerable people – in this way is completely unacceptable and could constitute an offence.”

The craze originated in the USA and has spread across the Atlantic ahead of Hallowe’en on October 31.

Ellesmere Port LPU inspector Chris Williams said: “We would strongly advise anyone tempted to take part in this type of behaviour this is not a funny prank.

“You will be committing criminal offences and we will take action against you, which could mean a night in the cells and the prospect of a criminal record.”
