A STRUGGLING crèche has come back from the brink to win a national competition.
Six months ago Dweezils, based at Asda in the Port Arcades, was earmarked for closure.
But now it has beaten off stiff competition from other Dweezils children's facilities around the UK to be named Crèche of the Year 2005.
Staff at the crèche admit they had struggled over the last few years to hit targets.
Their luck was turned around when Kath Oflu was appointed as the new manger.
But then came the bombshell that Dweezils was earmarked for closure last December.
A Dweezils spokeswoman said: 'Once the crèche had been emptied and the children's farewell parties taken place, Asda called the head office.
'Suddenly, we were told the crèche could stay. Everybody was in shock.
'Staff were drafted in from other nurseries to restore the facility. We started trading again but customers didn't know it had been saved, and sales had slumped.
'We thought there was no chance we'd hit our yearly targets, let alone be entered into the top five Dweezils crèches in the country.'
Slowly, the Port team edged into the top five chart until they were neck and neck for number one spot with Caerphilly.
'We thought no-one could touch them,' said the spokes-woman, 'but we were relentless in our attempts to win - and we have!'
Staff thank everyone for working so hard and supporting them to 'achieve the impossible'.
