A KELSALL teenager who has set up a website dedicated to local wildlife is calling on the Government not to sell off their habitats.

Two years ago 15-year-old wildlife enthusiast Alex Staniforth of Bramley Court started up his own wildlife website – www.cheshire-wildlife.co.uk. Alex said his aim was to create more awareness of wildlife conservation and inspire and interest people in the countryside.

Now Alex is using his website to call on people to join him and support his campaign to stop the Government selling Forestry Commission sites in the UK to private companies as part of the spending review.

He said he is particularly concerned about the future of his local woodland, Primrose Wood in Kelsall, and Delamere Forest.

Alex said: “The deforestation and less effectively monitored management of our forests will be disastrous, wildlife habitats will be lost and most of all, private companies would not have to allow access to the public.”

Alex added: “Polecats have been making a slow increase in Delamere, it is a haven for cyclists and walkers, and a hotspot for wildlife in general. I am urging the British public, to act now.”

Alex has already been distributing posters around Kelsall highlighting the issue, and he has written to PM David Cameron, and Eddisbury MP Stephen O’Brien.

Alex is now calling on others to do the same and sign up to a petition to save the forests.

Alex added: “Caroline Spelman, Environment Secretary, is expected to announce fresh plans on the issue in a few days so the message needs to get out fast. We cannot let our beautiful woodland perish for money.”
