A Cheshire village is hosting an annual charity gala to raise funds for North West Cancer Research

The Kelsall gala will be held on the afternoon of Saturday, May 7 at Kelsall Community Primary School .

This year will see the return of the crowning of the village Rose Queen.

This was one of the highlights of the village calendar and marked the start of summer as it was traditionally held at the beginning of May.

A black and white photograph from 1949 shows Rose Queen Shirley Astbury, who has been a stalwart member of the organising committee for NWCR (which incorporates Clatterbridge Cancer Research Trust ) since its foundation in 1978.

The organisers and the school have chosen not one, but two youngsters to share the glory.

The first will be for girls aged eight-11 chosen from the girls at the school and the second is the Rosebud, for girls under seven.

The gala is a fun day out for the family and starts at 1pm.
