QUEEN’S School pupils have been in the dragon’s den.

The Year 10 students took part in a Women’s Enterprise Day at the Catalyst Museum in Widnes.

In the style of the BBC’s popular venture capitalist programme Dragons’ Den, the girls had to create and sell an idea to a panel of judges. Not only did their product have to be a strong commercial investment, but it also had to combat climate change.

In teams the students planned their products, looked at cost implications and devised publicity campaigns. They came up with a robot that ran the home on solar power, Christmas decorations that produced energy rather than used it and a machine that converted teenager noise into useful energy.

The winning team, who were awarded top marks for both their business and scientific acumen, came up with ‘Sole Savers’ – a new development in technology that allowed energy created by the friction when walking to be stored in the soles of shoes.

The panel of judges were all connected with the scientific industry and two of them ran highly successful businesses.
