ST John Ambulance volunteer John Walkington from Great Sutton has received a special award from the Volunteer Centre in Chester for his long service to the community.

He was selected from hundreds of volunteers to receive one of 22 long service awards presented by the Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Sandra Rudd, at Chester Town Hall.

Mr Walkington has been with St John Ambulance for more than 12 years.

He has provided First Aid care at public events across Cheshire, and as a result of his diligence has progressed to the rank of Nursing Officer and is part of the Cheshire County Clinical Governance Team.

In these roles he arranges the care training for the St John volunteers across Cheshire and verifies patient report forms.

Stephanie Littler, marketing manager with St John Ambulance, Cheshire, said: 'I am really pleased that all John's hard work was recognised at the awards ceremony.

'However, John is just one of many exceptional St John Ambulance volunteers who give up their spare time to take care of local people.

'We are looking for more outstanding individuals to become St John volunteers and opportunities exist for both adults and younger people. These include first aiders at public events, youth leaders, and nursing and medical officers.
