THE public will have their say on a scheme to transform a former industrial site.

The borough council has produced a draft development brief for Cloister Way in Stanlow.

This 13-hectare brownfield site was once occupied by the Burmah Oil refinery but has since been reclaimed by the council.

Several small plots in the area have already been developed for industrial use.

Sean Walsh, borough planning assistant, says in a report: 'The unco-ordinated manner of these developments has highlighted the need to look at the site in its entirety.

'The development brief has therefore been produced, outlining the issues regarding the site and providing guidance on its future development.'

Mr Walsh adds: 'The prominent location next to the M53 and within the Mersey Forest Action Area means that a good level of building design and landscaping is required in order to enhance the image of the area.'

While the site is accessible by vehicles, there is presently a lack of pedestrian facilities.

Mr Walsh's report to the borough's planning committee says tackling crime and disorder is an important factor in the site's development.

Crime will be designed out by introducing security measures, which will possibly include lighting and cameras to make the area safer for workers and visitors.

He adds: 'A greater number of the public present on the site resulting from development will reduce the risk of acts of vandalism occurring.'

If you have any strong views about the scheme, you can send them to the borough council's planning department on Civic Way, Ellesmere Port.
