AN environment champion fears a campaign to block the building of a waste incinerator at Ince Marshes could fail after securing little backing from Ellesmere Port people.

Ralph Ryder, who spearheads the group CATS - Communities Against Toxics - organised a public meeting on Wednesday at the Phoenix Club in Cromwell Road to give people the chance to air their concerns.

Only 20 residents turned up to voice their opposition to Peel Environmental's plans to construct a 57-hectare complex to burn 600,000 tons of household waste from Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire.

Mr Ryder fears the lack of support from the town could be damaging to campaigners as they strive to compile as many objections as possible from people living near the site.

The plan has sparked a storm of protest from residents in the surrounding villages.

They have formed an action group named CHAIN - Cheshire Against Incinerators - to oppose it as well as holding a number of meetings.

Mr Ryder said: 'I was very disappointed with the poor attendance.

'People don't realise the environmental impact of this facility and how it will affect this town. They seem to accept it.

'I urge everyone in Ellesmere Port to show their support now and start sending their objections in to the county council.'

View the plans at the borough council offices in Civic Way, Ellesmere Port library and Hope Farm library in Great Sutton until the statutory consultation period for the planning application ends on March 17.

Send written objections to Emma Hancock, Environmental Planning, Backford Hall, Backford, Chester CH1 6PZ.
