STUDENTS across West Cheshire celebrated record GCSE results last week.

Schools and academies in Cheshire West and Chester netted a bumper crop of passes for the second year in a row.

Overall a total of 80% of Year 11 pupils gained five or more GCSEs at grade C or above – an improvement of 5% on last year.

An impressive 61% of students gained five or more GCSEs at grade C and above including English and maths.

Since 2008 the region’s schools and academies have notched up a massive 10% improvement, double the national figure.

Cllr Mark Stocks, executive member for children and families, said: “It has certainly been a great week for West Cheshire schools and I want to congratulate everyone concerned.”

A total of 3,788 pupils of 15 secondary schools and four academies sat the exams.

In Ellesmere Port, the following proportion of students achieved five or more GCSE passes at grade C or above:

Whitby High School – 87%; University Church of England Academy – 68%; Ellesmere Port Catholic High School – 73%.
