LEAFLETS spreading fear about Chester Zoo’s Natural Vision project were condemned by a council leader.

Leaflets were posted anonymously through doors in Upton advertising a public meeting claiming it was organised by ‘councillors’.

But chairman of Upton-by-Chester Parish Council Jean Evans condemned the leaflet’s creators and dismissed the usefulness of the meeting itself.

She said: “They set this up without consulting me. Everybody is getting in a muddle because they thought it was organised by the parish council.

“I couldn’t go but apparently the meeting was a shambles.”

A meeting has now been arranged for September 8 at 7pm in the Upton British Legion, Heath Road, Upton, Chester.

Mrs Evans added: “I would very much like to know who got that leaflet together. It was obviously someone with very strong views. It doesn’t say who printed and published it – that’s certainly not good practice, especially when you’re sounding off in such a subjective way.

“A lot of it is blatantly wrong – it’s putting false information. Anybody who’s politically involved wouldn’t do that sort of thing.

“It was not an organised meeting but a drop-in session, nobody was measuring ‘X’ number of people were in favour of this or against that.

“It seems to have been a complete waste of time.”

Mrs Evans added that she feared the loss of NWDA funding would have a negative impact on plans for the zoo.

She said: “I would think it highly unlikely they’re going to find any more funding like that in the current circumstances.”
