A THIEF who stole his lunch after being stood up on a Chester race day must pay £175.

Anthony Joseph Murray, 26, of Belle Vue Street, Manchester stole a sandwich and two packets of crisps, worth £4.03, from WH Smith in Chester train station on May 8 last year.

Chester Magistrates Court heard on Thursday that a friend had agreed to take him to the races. He failed to turn up and Murray’s defending solicitor said his client “had no money and he was very hungry”.

At the time, Murray was subject to a six month conditional discharge for theft of a bottle of perfume.

Murray was fined £50 for each theft and ordered to pay £60 costs and a £15 victims surcharge.
