A BARN containing 1,000 tonnes of straw caught alight on Monday.

The fire, at Cam Yr Alyn Farm in Llyn Dir Lane, Burton, near Rossett, was visible from the A483 and fire crews received many calls from motorists.

The first was made at 7.55am from a mobile phone and four engines from three stations tackled the blaze because the barn was near the farmhouse.

The fire continued to rage for several hours, with the Chester engine leaving at 9.51am.

The last call came at about 3pm, when a driver saw smoke as fire crews dampened down the surrounding area.

One engine remained as they continued to wet the surrounding area, although it was still not safe by late afternoon.

They also assisted the farmer using a JCB.
