A CAMPAIGN launched in memory of a teenager killed in a car crash in February has got the support of 1,000 people in just two weeks.

Friends and family of talented athlete Danny Evans, in February, are petitioning the Government to review sentencing guidelines.

“The petition is going really well, we’ve got 1,000 names already,” said Danny’s mum Debbie, of Normanby Drive in Connah’s Quay.

“While people are knocking on the door and still signing the petition we’ll keep collecting names.”

Danny – a promising 18-year-old Deeside College student – died after the car his friend Jack Hughes was driving hit a wall on the A548 Sealand Road and overturned.

Hughes, 18, of Bryn Hyfryd in Connah’s Quay, admitted causing Danny’s death by careless driving in June.

He was banned from driving for 12 months and given 100 hours community service.

The family started the petition earlier this month – and have the support of Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami.

“I don’t want another family to have to see the driver walk free.

“It could happen again. It happened to us and it could happen to anyone.”

She added: “We’re only two weeks in and I didn’t expect a response like this, but people aren’t happy.”

Debbie said she wants the sentencing guidelines for death by careless driving to be adjusted so they act as a deterrent to motorists.
