HUMAN bones and Roman pottery have been found buried in a pit by builders working on student accommodation at George Street in the city centre.

Workmen building an access to the site, next to the old George Street School building known as Oulton Place, were investigating a soft spot of earth using a shovel when they made the surprising discovery.

Ground worker Julian Young, who found bones on Friday afternoon, said: “It was a bit spooky.

“At first I thought it was a joke.

“When I pulled it out I started to find more so I went to speak to the site manager.

“I think there’s a lot more there.

“I love working around Chester, you never know what you’re going to find.I’m really interested in all that stuff.”

Cheshire West and Chester council archaeologists visited the site and confirmed some of the bones were human and could even be up to 500 years old.

Spokesperson Shirley Wingfield said: “12 small bones were found and two of them are definitely human.

“Underneath the bones they found Roman pottery.

“Workmen are making an access road and they hit what is called a ‘soft area’ and that’s where the bones were found.

“It’s not unusual to find fragments of bones, when the bus station site was excavated fragments of human bones were found there which were thought to be post medieval period. It could be these are the same.

“What will happen now is an excavation will be carried out by a team of archeologists.”
