World Breastfeeding Week is here.

Run by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, its goals are to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.

But how easy is it for mums to find somewhere to nurse their little ones when they're out and about in Chester?

Well, the aptly-named Breastfeeding Friendly Chester think it's pretty decent on the whole.

The group was formed nearly five years ago by friends who wanted to promote the city as somewhere breastfeeding is welcomed.

Now, after a hiatus of sorts over the past year, it's back with a new group of mums who have volunteered to help reinvigorate the scheme.

"It's quite daunting to feed in public and the idea is to provide a resource for mums to check where welcoming places are so they can feel more confident about going out shopping," a spokeswoman for Breastfeeding Friendly Chester said.

"Chester is generally a great place for supporting mums but the things that we would really like to see are accessible changing facilities and an acceptable standard of cleanliness - some places leave us running for the door!

"That's important to all mums - not just the breastfeeding ones."

The group is currently working on an up-to-date directory of breastfeeding-friendly eateries and venues in Chester and surrounding areas which mums can easily consult, which they hope to have ready for their relaunch proper in September or October.

It will also include what facilities are available for bottle-feeding mums, such as changing facilities.

Current members display Breastfeeding Friendly Chester stickers in their windows and commit to welcoming breastfeeding in any public part of their premises, as well as training staff on how to make families welcome.

The group wants to hear from businesses who would like to sign up as members of the network.

And mums are, of course, invited to get in touch too.
