But Cheshire Constabulary spokeswoman Rachel Hayes said police had been out to the scene and there was ‘no trace’.

“We’ve had a look and we can’t find it, “ she added.

This is the second such incident around the same location less than a fortnight ago.

Police had been alerted to reports around 4pm on Saturday February 27 that a horse had jumped a fence and was stranded on a grass verge by the side of the motorway. A block was put in place westbound near junction 15, heading towards North Wales, while the search was conducted.

However, North West Motorway Police again said there was no trace of the animal and all lanes were reopened at about 4.15pm.
