A homeless goat who won the hearts of an entire community has found a permanent home, thanks to the efforts of villagers in Crowton.

The Chronicle highlighted the plight of Gertie the goat earlier this week after she was first spotted roaming around the village about two weeks ago.

When nobody came forward to claim Gertie, she was taken in by resident Kathryn Steer who has been looking after her, with Gertie able to receive vet treatment for her udder mastitis thanks to donations from locals.

But it was clear that Gertie needed a permanent home and the Crowton community put out an appeal to find a suitable place for her to be looked after.

Gertie was spotted around the village of Crowton

Their wish was granted when The Goat Sanctuary in Alderley Edge offered to take Gertie in to give her the opportunity to live a happy life with lots of ‘goaty friends’.

Crowton resident Rachel Prescott said: “It’s like a goat heaven for Gertie. We’re hoping we can move her there this weekend at the latest. The centre are a sanctuary in the true sense of the word, they are not a rescue centre or a working farm. They just provide a place where goats can live a peaceful, tranquil life.

Gertie has improved a lot since being captured

“It’s not open to the public and they had stopped taking in abandoned goats but once they heard about Gertie, they have very kindly offered to help.”

Rachel added: “Donations can be given through my crowd funding site. Kathryn and I just want to thank everyone for their amazing generosity and offers of help. We personally think this is the best option for Gertie. She will love it there and live her life with lots of new goaty friends!”
