Pupils and staff at Holt Community Primary School are celebrating after headteacher Kate Goodwin won the TES Wales My Best Teacher Competition.

Mrs Goodwin, who has been headteacher at the school since 2011, was presented with the trophy by current Welsh rugby international Jonathan Davies at the Vale Hotel in Glamorgan, and will receive £5,000 to spend on IT equipment for her school.

Governors chairman John Roberts said: “This is excellent news and very well deserved. All the pupils at the school as well as the wider school community are delighted and congratulate Kate on her success.”

The My Best Teacher campaign was run by teachers’ online service TES and aims to recognise inspirational teachers in Wales.

Mrs Goodwin said: “I’m naturally very pleased to receive this award on behalf of everyone at the school. This is recognition of the fantastic work carried out by all the staff, governors, parents and, most importantly of all, the children at Holt Primary School.”

Education minister Huw Lewis said: “The success of learners, schools and, indeed, the entire education sector, is dependent on the input of committed, inspiring teachers like Kate.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition and I’m sure pupils, staff and parents will want to join me in thanking Kate for her contribution.”

News of Mrs Goodwin’s award follows another success for Holt after school inspectors from Estyn found that all aspects of the school were classified as good earlier this year.
