Cheshire West is in the grip of severe gale force winds.

A Met Office yellow warning of wind for the region has been extended to 10am on Tuesday (February 2).

With gusts of 60mph likely, a spokesperson for the Met Office said there is risk of disruption to transport and power supplies, as well as the possibility of some structural damage.

The south-westerly gales will strengthen throughout today, before easing on Tuesday morning.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is advising motorists to check the forecast before setting out and to leave extra time for journeys if travel conditions are poor.

The adverse weather conditions are affecting rubbish collections across the borough.

While scheduled collections will continue to be made, Cheshire West and Chester Council has warned that the high winds may cause spillages and containers to be blown around.

A spokesperson has asked that boxes and bags due for collection are secure to reduce the likelihood of spillages.
