A 28-year-old man from Helsby who pleaded guilty to carrying a kitchen knife in public said it was for protection.

Mark Ellams, of Mountain View, admitted possession of a knife in a public place and possession of controlled Class B drug mephedrone – which is also called MCAT and Meow Meow – on November 27 last year at a hearing at Chester Magistrates Court on Thursday (March 19).

Police were carrying out routine stop-checks on Townfield Lane in Frodsham when they pulled a car over in which Ellams was the front-seat passenger.

Officers found a bag of white powder and a yellow kitchen knife in the glove box, both of which Ellams said were his.

The court heard he told police he had bought the MCAT that day and that he had the knife with him for protection because people were after him.

He said the knife made him feel safe but that he did not have the guts to use it.

Ellams was released on unconditional bail until he is sentenced at Chester Magistrates Court on April 10.
