A TEACHER from Helsby High School has joined Wales’s oldest boy band as its musical director.

Leigh Mason, 27, who has taught music at the Chester Road school for four years, was appointed musical director of the award-winning Welsh choir.

“It’s something that I enjoy doing – I’ve been interested in music all my life,” said Leigh, of Buckley, Flintshire.

“I wanted to do something new, I have done mixed choirs, female choirs and school choirs.

“I have worked with the Flintshire Youth Choir, Mold and District Choral Society and the Four Counties Youth Choir in North Wales so I have been around the area for some time.

“People tell me I’m too busy and I try to do to much but if I didn’t do anything I would just be wasting my time.”

The Llangollen-based choir have sold hundreds of thousands of records.

“I think the choir has done the modern thing well, releasing CDs with pop songs on,” added Leigh.

“We’re going to go back to more technical music and we’d quite like to get back to the Eisteddfod.”
