An 'unusually high volume' of traffic is expected in Cheshire this weekend, as Black Friday takes hold.

Shoppers are warned to be patient and behave sensibly this weekend as Cheshire police anticipate extra traffic congestion.

And drivers who may be stuck in traffic for a while are even advised to take a supply of food, drink and warm blankets in their vehicles.

Historically, the Black Friday rush to the shops has caused traffic problems around the county and officers are asking people to patient and to be aware of the increased demand on the road and travel networks.

Cheshire Oaks in particular can experience high levels of traffic onto and off the M53 and the surrounding roads on a normal day, but extra patrols will be deployed this weekend to help manage any situations as they arise to ease congestion.

Police are asking motorists to consider their plans over the weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday and to vary their shopping times to make these days as stress-free as possible for all concerned.

Chief Inspector Giles Orton said shoppers should plan their journey in advance, which might include considering going out at a different time – such as later in the evening.

“Wherever you decide to shop this weekend you are reminded to behave rationally and with dignity," he said. "We recognise the excitement this weekend can generate and we would ask anyone coming to the area over the weekend to follow us on Twitter (@PoliceEPort) for the latest information – don’t let your let your Black Friday turn into a Blue Christmas.”
