A lorry fire on the M6 near Knutsford is causing heavy traffic for motorists this morning (April 10).

The motorway had to be closed southbound between junctions 19 and 20 while firefighters battled the blaze, which was reported shortly after 9.30am.

One lane remains blocked as emergency services remain on the scene, and there are significant delays in the area.

A photo tweeted by Cheshire police shows huge clouds of thick black smoke billowing from the vehicle.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two firefighters in breathing apparatus used two hose reel jets to tackle the blaze.

"The fire is now out. The crews are inspecting the lorry using a thermal imaging camera to check for any hotspots.

"Lanes two and three are being reopened for traffic, lane one remains closed."
