Heavy traffic blocking up the M56 and other major roads around Chester is now easing.

An incident on the A494 had caused police to close it as a woman threatened to jump off a bridge above the dual carriageway near RAF Sealand.

Congestion had built up on the Welsh Road, A540 and A483 as drivers take diversion routes to try to avoid getting stuck in queues, but traffic is steadily returning to normal.

The A494 was closed and at a standstill in both directions stretching back from the closure near Deeside Industrial Park and Garden City.

Some drivers got out of their cars with no sign of when the incident may be resolved and the westbound tailback reached as far as junction 15 on the M56.

Cheshire Police tweeted the traffic had also backing up at Cheshire Oaks and the A5117.

Commuters heading for Wirral from Chester experienced heavy traffic on the A540 and also trying to escape through Saughall.

The emergency services were called at 3.11pm and officers are currently speaking to a woman who has been spotted on the ledge of the cycle bridge.

A diversion is in place for M56 eastbound traffic to use the A55.
