HARRODS is displaying a specially-commissioned royal wedding-themed cake created by a Chester firm.

Cake, based at The Square in Chester, was asked by pottery giants Wedgwood to come up with a tiered spectacular for the window display of London’s most famous store.

It is part of an exhibition of designer cakes to commemorate the marriage between Prince William and Kate Middleton on Friday.

The metre-high designs are each individually styled by esteemed designers from the worlds of fashion, fine jewellery, food and interiors, with each invited to present their take on the royal nuptials.

Tim and Jules Smith, from Vicars Cross, the husband and wife owners of Cake, were approached by Wedgwood because they are a relatively local to the Stoke-on-Trent based firm.

Tim said: “We’re made-up. To have one of our cakes displayed in Harrods’s window is one thing but to have it there in connection with such a prestigious occasion as the royal wedding and in conjunction with Wedgwood is a double thrill.”

Tim said he was ‘the muscle’ and his wife Jules provided the ‘artistry’ behind the cake which features the royal couple’s initials and the date of the happy event.

Apart from Wedgwood, other participating designers include Jo Malone, Paul Smith, Estée Lauder and Ormonde Jayne.

Housed in an ornate blue and silver frame, incorporating Prince Williams’s coat of arms, the wedding cakes will rotate throughout the day to display the entirety of their design.
