A CHESTER choir helped a leading charity spread its message to ministers at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester this week.

The women’s choir A Handbag of Harmonies were invited by Oxfam to sing their anthem When the Waters Rise to promote the charity’s Grow Campaign to delegates as they left the Midland Hotel on Peter Street.

The anthem, composed by Matt Baker and Helen Newall, was originally written to complement the Oxfam garden of the same name at this year’s RHS Tatton Show in July.

The garden, designed by singer Dori Miller was awarded a gold medal by Royal Horticultural Society judges.

Barbara Stocking, Oxfam GB chief executive, said: “The great majority of poor farmers around the world are women, who try and grow food to feed themselves and their families despite the dramatic effects of climate change. When the Waters Rise, the anthem written and performed by A Handbag of Harmonies, is a powerful and hopeful reminder for us all of what we can – and must – work as a global community: a world where everyone has enough to eat.”
