Hammond students recently travelled to Amsterdam to take part in MUNA, the Model United Nations Conference.

MUNA is a simulation of the United Nations and is a large international annual event with schools from the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Turkey, India and the UK.

For three days, students gather at Alfrink College, Zoetermeer, near The Hague, to debate global issues and work together on resolutions to many complex world issues. Students spend time lobbying which involves merging resolutions in preparation for the committees once they go into session. Once in session, each committee debates on the proposed resolutions.

Students attending develop a wide range of skills, such as research, lobbying, public speaking and debating as well as gaining insight into how the UN operates – how it facilitates cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights and achieving world peace. The conference also extends their understanding of complex global issues.

The visit included a trip to Humanity House in The Hague which is a museum and educational platform, and a sightseeing trip around Amsterdam. Students stayed with host families and also enjoyed a full social programme including, cycling , eating out and an organised party.

Hammond student Saskia Longley, Year 10 and from Manchester, said: “It was a fantastic experience for me. It really improved my confidence.” Joanna Mitton, also Year 10, and from Tattenhall, said: “MUNA was one of the best experiences of my life. I met some really amazing people and learnt a lot.”
