A CHRISTMAS tree to celebrate the lives of family members and friends who have passed away has raised more than £20,000 for Halton Haven Hospice.

About 500 people visited the hospice – which provides palliative care for people in Frodsham and Helsby – for its annual Light Up A Life event last Friday.

Ciaran Clotworthy, events manager at Halton Haven Hospice, said: “The event is so close to our hearts, and it’s so nice to see people support it year on year no matter what the weather.

“The snow came down just minutes before the event started and we did worry that many people wouldn’t brave the weather – but come rain or shine it seems we have the support of the local residents and that’s so lovely to see.

“Although the event is emotional, I do hope people enjoyed it.”

Halton chaplain Ian Rigby led a service and the lights were switched on by Halton Mayor Marie Wright.

The tree will light the grounds of the hospice for the 12 days of Christmas and the public can visit the grounds and see the tree.
