THE RSPCA is urging landowners to help give rehabilitated wildlife a second chance.
Dr Andrew Kelly, manager of RSPCA Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre, near Nantwich, Cheshire, is looking for a range of different habitats to release previously sick, injured or orphaned animals, including birds.
He said: “Over 2,000 wild animals are rehabilitated and released from Stapeley Grange every year, and finding appropriate environments for them to go back to can be a challenge.
“Although we do have a network of people who work with us, the nature of releasing some species means we’re always looking for more and I’m keen to hear from anyone who might be interested in allowing us to release rehabilitated wild animals on their land.”
The centre takes in animals that have been involved in road traffic accidents, caught in traps, shot and suffered fishing tackle injuries, amongst other things.
Habitats being sought include undisturbed woodland; private ponds or lakes, preferably with islands; conservation-friendly farmland or even large gardens with cover.
“We find the environments first then match them with the species,” Dr Kelly added.
Species would typically include hedgehogs, song birds and water foul such as swans and ducks, though more specialist sites are also required.
