A MID Cheshire-based environmental group is fighting proposals for what has previously been considered a green energy source.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England's Middlewich branch hosted a meeting in the town last week and claimed wind farms with 100m tall blades are both an eyesore and create unbearable noise for nearby homeowners.

At a meeting to discuss whether clean energy created by 'structures the height of Big Ben's clock tower scattered across the Cheshire countryside' is really the way forward, the CPRE heard from Geoff Baker who is campaigning against npower's proposals for a three-turbine windpower station on the Cheshire Plain, affecting Darnhall, Eaton, Tarporley, Rushton and Alpraham.

Richard Bass, chairman of the Cheshire branch, said: 'It seems that the odds are stacked against those who are concerned locally about wind farms. In other parts of the country, objections have succeeded but only where local individuals and groups have joined forces to make their voices heard.

'If we don't act to insist that environmental considerations are met in such cases, we risk a rash of ill-considered developments in sensitive locations all over the county.'
