A COUPLE who met over the groceries at Crewe Co-op have notched up 50 years of marriage.

Stan and Muriel Evans met in 1955 when they were working in the Underwood Lane store.

They married just over a year later on a sunny August day at St Michael's Church in Crewe.

And on Friday 82-year-old Stan and Muriel, 71, marked their golden wedding anniversary in the same house they moved into as newly-weds on Marshfield Avenue.

Muriel said: 'We were on opposite sides of the shop. I was 19 and he was about 12 years older. At first we were friends but it turned into something more.'

Stan moved on to work for Rolls-Royce in Crewe while Muriel stayed at home to look after the couple's five children.

David, Elaine, Janice, Wendy and Alison live in the area and the couple have seven grandchildren.

The family celebrated with a meal at the Boar's Head, Walgherton.

After the children grew up Muriel spent a lot of her time looking after elderly folk at West View care home.

Stan, who joined the Royal Navy as a telegrapher during the Second World War, said: 'The age difference has never been a problem at all. I still have to get up every morning and make her a cup of tea - it's tiring but keeps you fit.

'We have our little falling outs but we always make up before we go to bed.'
