CHESTER Green Party is fielding four candidates in the May local government elections - its highest number in more than a decade.

Activists say this is a reflection of the rising importance of environmental issues.

The Greens say they stand for a healthy environment, decent services and a strong local voice.

Adrian Carr, Green candidate for College ward, said: 'Green issues are more important than ever before and unless we stand united with one voice about these issues, the consequences will be catastrophic.'

Adrian, who works for M&S Money in Chester, added: 'Just a few Green Party councillors have made great strides regarding local issues in Kirklees and Norwich, and we would love to emulate their contributions, for example by supporting the Chronicle's Campaign to stop the Ince Marsh incinerator proposals.'

Chester Green Party wants to tackle climate change by campaigning in favour of renewable energy sources like solar power and putting money into public transport and safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists.

They want to protect people's quality of life by preserving parks and wildlife and insisting there should be no more building on open spaces in Chester.

The party's candidates standing on May 4 are: Adrian Carr (College); Tom Barker (Upton and Westlea); Janet Dutton (Hoole All Saints) and Diana Wilderspin Jones (Newton St Michael). david.holmes@cheshirenews.co.uk POWER
