PLANS to turn a former greengrocers in Vicars Cross into a betting shop have been unanimously opposed by parish councillors.

Great Boughton Parish Council have put forward their objection to an application made by Corbett Bookmakers Ltd for a betting licence to open up a store at Green Lane shopping precinct.

During the last meeting, councillors raised concerns over parking, litter, an increase in youth nuisance and the loss of a retail outlet which would benefit the community.

The bookmakers would be based at the old Francis Thomas greengrocer, which closed back in February.

Parish Cllr Sue Proctor said: “I know residents are concerned of a loss of another shop and they don’t think a bookmakers is what is needed.

“The more mixture of retail outlets we have the better, as it is we’re quite restricted.”

Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) confirmed there had been objections to the proposal during the consultation period, which ended Wednesday October 20, but a date has not yet been set for a hearing.

Great Boughton Parish Council is looking for more residents to join a rota to lock and unlock the two sets of gates at Queens Road Community Park.

Proposals to upgrade the equipment at Thackeray drive play area has moved a step closer thanks to grants received from CWAC Members’ Budgets.

Chester Brass Band has been booked to play Christmas Carols on Monday, December 20 at the Old Laundry Corner, Heath Lane, at 6.30pm and then onto the Vicars Cross United Reformed Church at 7.30pm.

All local residents are invited to attend.
