A SCHOOL has recognised the efforts of a longstanding supporter by naming its new £660,000 arts suite after him.

The Edwin Moss Centre for Performing Arts was officially opened on Monday by its namesake, who has been governor at Rudheath High School for more than 20 years.

Cheshire County Council chairman Cllr Neville Price was also in attendance and praised the centre as a 'superb addition' to the opportunities on offer to pupils.

He also praised the commitment to the school of Mr Moss, and said it was fitting that the will provide a permanent tribute to one of its staunchest supporters.

Seventy guests were shown the new facilities, which include a full-size dance studio, two music classrooms, five music practice rooms, a recording studio and an office.

The centre will also serve as a facility for performing arts groups in the local community. Pupils raised £50,000 through charity activities towards the centre, with a further £100,000 given by Vale Royal Borough Council and £100,000 from the DfES when the school was awarded specialist college status in September 2003. The rest of the costs are funded from the school budget.

School spokesman Graham Cookson said: 'The centre provides us with a better range of facilities for the courses we already offer and we hope the pupils will respond to that.'
