A TREACHEROUS roundabout is facing millions of pounds of improvement work to help stop accidents and end years of traffic chaos.

The Posthouse Roundabout, at the junction of the A55 and the A483, is due to get an £8m facelift as part of a pledge by the Government to remove bottlenecks and keep traffic moving on England’s motorways and A roads.

Due to start in 2014, the improvements have been welcomed by councillors and motorists after years of campaigning to improve the accident prone junction, which has seen numerous pile-ups over the years with lorries over-turning and causing traffic to snake back for miles along Wrexham Road.

Last Monday, Chester MP Stephen Mosley welcomed the announcement on Twitter to hundreds of followers, tweeting: “Delighted to hear of £8m Gov investment in Posthouse roundabout #Chester (A55/A483 jn) to tackle queuing + improve traffic flow.”

The works, which are part of the £107m Government pledged improvements nationwide, will reduce years of traffic congestion and queues by:

Widening the A55 eastbound exit slip road and western part of the circulatory carriageway at the A55 eastbound approach.

Widening the northern part of the circulatory carriageway at the A483 southbound approach and the southern part of the circulatory carriageway between the A483 southbound exit and the A483 northbound approach.

Installing traffic signals to the A483 southbound approach.

Welcoming the improvements, Mr Mosley said he had been campaigning to get the roundabout improved since he was elected back in 2010.

He said: “I’m delighted that the Government has responded to my calls to improve the Posthouse roundabout.

“There is huge congestion at the roundabout at peak times, and this massive investment will help improve traffic flows and make it easier to get in and out of the city.”
