AMBITIOUS plans to create a golf course with modern facilities in Halton which will be the envy of clubs across the North West have been teed off.
Widnes Golf Club, which has been established for more than 100 years, has set its sights on land at Pex Hill for an 18-hole course costing millions of pounds.
The club has teamed up with GL White Property in drawing up an outline planning application which has been submitted to Halton and Knowlsey councils as the site borders both authorities.
To cover the cost of the course, which early estimates suggest could be £4m, the club is planning to sell its existing course on High-field Road and proposals are in the pipeline to create a mixed use residential development.
A club spokesman said: 'If the club is to provide the standard of facilities that are now commonplace in golf clubs it must be alive to the need for change.'
