A CHANCE meeting over a wardrobe repair job has led to a golden romance.

Joiner George Roberts went to The Vaults in Malpas where his wife-to-be Angela had a wardrobe she wanted fixing.

Angela had come from Ireland to look after two little boys at the pub, supposedly for a short time before going to Surrey to study nursing – but she never got there!

Romance blossomed and the couple were married at St Joseph’s Church in Malpas.

They have lived on Church Street for 50 years, while George 70, worked as a builder in the village, and Angela, 69, was the cook at Malpas Alport School for 30 years.

They have two daughters, Veronica and Linda, but sadly lost their son, George, last year. The couple have five grandchildren.

Mr Roberts summed up the secret of their successful years of marriage: ‘It takes two to make an argument, and I won’t argue.’

They are both keen crown green bowlers, and members of Malpas Bowling Club. They celebrated the milestone with a party at the club and, instead of presents, asked that donations be made to Nightingale House in Wrexham.
